Daytona: the subdials have to be right

The Daytona is a chronograph, and its three subdials at 3, 6 and 9 are the most scrutinised detail in the entire replica market. Their diameter, their spacing from the centre, and the depth of the concentric rings inside them all have to match — get any one wrong and the dial reads as a Daytona-shaped watch rather than a Daytona.

The tachymeter bezel is the second test. On ceramic references the numerals are moulded and filled level with the surface; on steel references they are engraved and filled. Either way they should not sit proud of the bezel or look painted on.

Working pushers matter

A Daytona whose pushers do nothing is a dress watch in disguise. Ours run working chronograph movements — press, time, reset, and the hands should return to a dead zero. Stock covers 40 mm in steel, rose gold Oysterflex, and two-tone.
