The “Dark Side of the Moon” is Omega’s black ceramic Speedmaster, launched in 2013 as ref 311.92.44.51.01.003: a 44.25mm chronograph whose case, bezel, dial and pushers are all made of zirconium oxide ceramic. The name now covers a whole ceramic family, including the Black Black, the Vintage Black and the white-ceramic White Side of the Moon.
Why is it called the Dark Side of the Moon?
The name honours Apollo 8. In December 1968 its crew became the first humans to fly behind the Moon and see its far side with their own eyes — the “dark side” that no observer on Earth can ever view. Omega attached the phrase to its first all-black ceramic Speedmaster, the black case standing in for the Moon’s hidden face. The original ran the co-axial calibre 9300, the first in-house chronograph movement fitted to a Speedmaster, visible through a sapphire caseback. The family then grew quickly: a Grey Side of the Moon in 2014, the White Side of the Moon and a quartet of black variants in 2015, and a skeletonised Apollo 8 edition in 2018.
