“Ice blue” is the pale, glacial dial colour that Rolex reserves exclusively for its 950 platinum watches. Its two signature carriers are the Day-Date 40 — reference 228206 from 2015, replaced in 2022 by the fluted-bezel 228236 — and the platinum Daytona, launched as the 116506 in 2013 and continued today as the 126506. Unlike most terms on this site, ice blue is not a collector nickname at all: it is Rolex’s own official name for the colour.
Why is it called the Ice Blue?
The name describes what the dial does: under most light it reads as a cold, silvery blue, closer to glacier ice than to any conventional blue dial. More important is what it signals. Rolex uses the colour as a deliberate marker of platinum, its densest and most expensive case metal, so an ice-blue dial works as quiet shorthand — anyone who knows the catalogue knows what the watch is made of without reading a line of text. Every ice-blue dial in the modern Rolex catalogue is cased in 950 platinum; the colour has never been offered in steel or gold. The Daytona 116506 paired ice blue with a chestnut-brown Cerachrom bezel for the model’s 50th anniversary in 2013, and the 2025 platinum Land-Dweller extended the colour to a honeycomb-patterned dial.
