Test One: The Two-Colour Ceramic Boundary

On a two-colour ceramic bezel the joint between the halves should be a clean, sharp line. Cheap replicas show colour bleed, a soft gradient, or an aluminium insert printed to imitate ceramic gloss. Put the boundary under magnification: you want a crisp transition with matching sheen on both halves, because mismatched gloss means the two colours were finished by different processes. Check the numerals too — they should be engraved and then filled, sitting fractionally below the surface, not printed on top where they will wear through in months. The Batman is the sternest test here: blue against black gives the boundary nowhere to hide sloppy edges, which is exactly why we photograph that split on every Batman build we grade.

Test Two: The Independent 24-Hour Hand

Pull the crown to the first setting position. On a true GMT movement the local hour hand jumps in clean one-hour increments while the 24-hour hand and the minute hand keep their positions — that decoupling is the entire point of the complication, letting you change time zones without stopping the watch. On a fake GMT the two hands are pinned together at a fixed 2:1 ratio and can never separate: the fourth hand is decoration, not function. A GMT clone whose fourth hand cannot be set independently is not a GMT, whatever the bezel looks like. Test Three: The Bezel Back-Play Check

The GMT-Master bezel is bidirectional with 24 clicks per rotation — one detent per hour graduation — unlike the unidirectional dive bezel on a Submariner, it must turn both ways with equal precision. Rotate it one click in each direction and check for back-play: the bezel should land with a firm detent and hold its position without wobble between clicks. Then run a full rotation — the triangle at the top should return exactly over 12, and the 24-hour graduations should track the dial markers at every stop. Loose, mushy clicks or a pip that drifts off-centre after a full turn are the marks of a cheap click-spring, and they get worse with use, not better.

Jubilee or Oyster

Both bracelets appear across our 49 builds. The five-link Jubilee — a design that first appeared on the Datejust — drapes more closely on the wrist and reads dressier; it is the classic pairing for the Pepsi. The three-link Oyster is flatter, sportier and suits the Batman and all-black 116710. On any bracelet, check that the end links sit flush against the case with no vertical play, that the clasp closes with a single clean snap, and that the crown logo on the clasp is stamped in relief rather than shallow-etched.
