The “Batman” is the Rolex GMT-Master II with a blue-and-black Cerachrom bezel and black dial — ref. 116710BLNR from 2013 to 2019, and ref. 126710BLNR from 2019 to the present. By current collector convention the name applies specifically to the BLNR on the three-link Oyster bracelet; the identical watch on a five-link Jubilee is the “Batgirl”.
Why is it called the Batman?
The nickname surfaced on collector forums within days of the 116710BLNR’s debut at Baselworld 2013: a black watch with a dark-blue accent was an obvious match for the caped crusader’s palette, and the rival suggestion — “Bruiser” had a brief run — never caught on. The watch itself was more significant than the name implies. It was the first Rolex fitted with a two-colour ceramic bezel, made as a single piece of Cerachrom with the blue half achieved through a chemical treatment before sintering — a process Rolex patented, having long maintained that a clean joint between two ceramic colours was impossible.

The generational change matters on the wrist and inside the case: calibre 3285 raised the power reserve from 48 to 70 hours and introduced the Chronergy escapement, while the 2021 addition of an Oyster bracelet option restored the original Batman configuration to the catalogue after a two-year gap. Since 2019 the bezel’s blue has also read slightly brighter than on the 116710BLNR, a detail collectors use to separate the generations at a glance.
