The movement premium

Movement tier Listings Average price
Japanese movement 243 £452
Swiss-grade movement 1242 £945

A Swiss-grade movement carries a 109% premium over the equivalent Japanese-movement build. What you are paying for: closer movement architecture to the genuine calibre, a smoother seconds sweep, longer power reserve and better long-term serviceability. Our Swiss vs Japanese movement guide covers the differences in detail.

How to read these numbers

  • Entry prices under £350 are reduced Japanese-movement pieces — honest starter clones, not Swiss-grade builds.
  • Brand averages differ mainly because of case complexity: a Richard Mille tonneau in carbon TPT costs more to build than a steel three-hander, clone or not.
  • Anything advertised elsewhere under £200 as a “super clone” is almost certainly a standard replica with a printed dial and a basic quartz or low-grade automatic movement — see super clone vs replica.

Methodology

Figures are computed directly from live catalogue prices (1435 published listings) at the start of each quarter. No sampling, no estimates. Minimum and maximum are actual listing prices; averages are unweighted means per brand. Next refresh: quarterly.
