The “Snoopy” refers to Omega’s Speedmaster Silver Snoopy Award editions: three commemorative 42mm manual-wind chronographs — ref 3578.51 of 2003, ref 311.32.42.30.04.003 of 2015 and ref 310.32.42.50.02.001 of 2020 — that celebrate the Silver Snoopy Award NASA gave Omega in 1970 for its part in the safe return of Apollo 13. Each carries Snoopy artwork on the dial, the caseback, or both.
Why is it called the Snoopy?
Since 1968 NASA has allowed astronauts to present the Silver Snoopy — a sterling-silver pin flown in space — to people who make outstanding contributions to flight safety, and fewer than 1% of the eligible workforce receives one in any given year. Omega earned its award on 5 October 1970. After an oxygen-tank explosion crippled Apollo 13, the crew timed the critical 14-second engine burn that corrected their re-entry trajectory using a Speedmaster, the electronic timers having been powered down to save the ship. The watches commemorate those fourteen seconds: the 2015 edition asks “What could you do in 14 seconds?” around its dial, while the 2020 model sends an animated Snoopy around the far side of the Moon on the caseback whenever the chronograph runs.
